Explore the past in VRchaeology: Prologue

VRchaeelogy: Prologue is a short virtual reality exploration game in which you take on the role of an archaeologist, exploring an abandoned mine and using a variety of different tools to explore and dig up prehistoric relics.

A simple simulation

Like a lot of short VR exploration games, VRchaeology: Prologue is essentially a test of the system that allows you to interact with the environment. Each tool requires a different technique and set of controls, and each clue and piece of evidence displays a different feature of the virtual reality creation. The lighting and detail of the old mine make it an immersive and atmospheric experience. One challenge for VR users is that this room-scale game features a playing area that measures 3 meters by 3 meters, which may be larger than the available space for many players. The banjo soundtrack can feel a little intrusive, with fast-paced music that doesn't necessarily reflect the steady pace of the exploration gameplay.

A fascinating demonstration of a concept

VRchaeology: Prologue does a good job of presenting its tools and environments. It's too short to draw any real conclusions about gameplay, and the larger playing area could be an issue for players in most living rooms.

PROS

  • Interesting tools with varied mechanics
  • Educational exploration gameplay

CONS

  • Country western soundtrack can be intrusive
  • Large playing area
